How to Reduce Condensation in Commercial Display Chillers

During the summer, it’s common to notice condensation forming on the doors of display chillers in supermarkets. This is especially noticeable around the door seals, where water droplets tend to accumulate. Many customers may wonder if this indicates a quality issue with the commercial refrigerator. However, this is not necessarily the case.

Understanding the Cause of Condensation

In reality, this condensation is a normal occurrence due to the high temperature and humidity typically experienced during summer. Display chillers are designed to maintain a low internal temperature to keep products fresh. However, because temperature naturally transfers from areas of low temperature to high temperature, the external surface of the chiller, including the glass doors, tends to be cooler than the surrounding environment. When the humidity in the air exceeds 80%, water vapor condenses on the cooler surfaces, leading to the formation of visible droplets, especially on the door seals and glass.

Tips to Prevent Excessive Condensation

While some condensation is normal, there are a few steps you can take to minimize its occurrence:

Tips 1: Proper Placement

Position the commercial refrigerator in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. This helps reduce the temperature differential between the chiller and its environment, thereby minimizing condensation.

Tips 2: Regular Maintenance

Wipe down the glass doors and other areas where condensation forms with a soft cloth daily. Regular cleaning can prevent the accumulation of moisture, making it harder for water droplets to form.

Tips 3: Adjusting the Temperature

If the products stored in the chiller do not require extremely low temperatures, consider raising the internal temperature slightly. This reduces the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the chiller, thereby reducing the likelihood of condensation. For example, beverages in display chillers are best stored at around 7°C. A lower temperature may not only increase condensation but also negatively affect the taste of the beverages.

Conclusion

Condensation on display chillers is primarily caused by the difference between the low internal temperature and the higher external temperature. By understanding the root cause and following the steps outlined above, you can effectively reduce the occurrence of condensation and maintain the optimal performance of your commercial refrigerator or display chiller.
